The game progresses, and it becomes evident that everyone is savoring each hand, each move, knowing that these gestures will soon be but a part of the past. The finality is inescapable. The players exchange knowing glances, a silent acknowledgment of the shared sentiment that pulses through their hearts.
As the night draws to a close and the cards are finally put away, the friends find themselves grappling with mixed emotions. Sadness fills their chests, but there is also a sense of gratitude for the countless hours spent huddled together, battling it out in the game they love. This last game of cards was not merely an ending; it was a tribute to the countless memories and moments of joy they had shared over the years.

Andy's Last Game Of Cards
I met Andy when I was the owner of a care home in South Devon (UK). At the time of this card game he was just short of his hundredth birthday.
I suppose that, because there's always the chance that we'll fall under the proverbial bus, none of knows for sure when we're doing something, visiting somewhere or speaking to somebody whether it's for the last time. We know there's an outside chance but for most daily activities it's not all that likely and we don't dwell on it.
As we get older, however, the odds reduce and when we're very old the possibllities become probabilities such that any walk around the garden, glass of wine, visit from a friend or... game of cards, could well be for the last time. In my experience most old folk don't dwell on it either; they live life as fully as they're able, treating each day as a bonus.
Andy had served in the First World War, bayonet charges and all, yet he was a charming, self-effacing and polite man who wouldn't upset anyone for the world. This tale is one of many that will build into a collection entitled 'Fast Falls The Eventide'; a line taken from Francis Lyte's hymn, Abide With Me, written in Brixham, South Devon.
All the stories I relate from my memories of Berryfield contain a mix of humour and sadness because that's just how it was.
