"Top 100 Classic Love Poems of All Time" is my labor of love to judge by reading and comparing those classical poems regarded by others as the best or greatest of all time and make my own considerate decisions as to which compose the Top 100. As an incurable romantic, I have always been attracted to poems of love and the consequences of love from the earthly to the eternal expressions. I disciplined myself to include only poems that deeply stirred my own emotions and left songs for a different volume and curator. Regardless, I included one of the greatest love songs, "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair."
You will be treated to what I and others through the ages judge to be the top 100 classic love poems of all time. The list begins with William Blake, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her husband Robert; the classicists of Coleridge, Donne, and Jonson; English romantic poets Keats and Shelley; and concludes with some of the greatest poets of all time with Poe, Shakespeare, Yeats and Wordsworth. I have given you a dozen already, but there are more great poets and their poems, many of which those in love with love will recognize.
As a member of the Society of Classical Poets, I subscribe to a disciplined approach to reading and writing poetry that in order to meet classical standards must have meter and rhyme. These are the greatest love poems that transcend time and adhere to my standards.
You may ask why there is a limited set of 20th century classic love poems. My theory is because the advent of the phonograph, radio and Broadway Shows means some of the greatest love poems of the century were absorbed by song writers who put great lyrics to music. Consider a wide range of lyrics off the top of my head such as “Someday We’ll Be Together,” “You are the Wind Beneath My Wings,” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Those are great titles and the lyrics do not disappoint. They have rhythm, rhyme and evoke intense feelings.
You may also question my credentials to judge Classical Poetry and Classical Poets. You should read my academic credentials at the end, but more than that, I have already told you I am a member of the Society of Classical Poets and I have read and studied “How to Write Classical Poetry” published by the Society of Classical Poets. I have assiduously researched the various books, blogs and articles on the “best,” “greatest,” “top,” “most loved” poems and poets who have ever written about love and romance. I compared a compendium of lists over time to ascertain what others thought about each poem included in this volume.
